Veronyka Lau

Concept

Veronyka began her journey as an artist by investigating feminine space as a vessel for power dynamics, cultural waste, and resistance. These ideas manifested in the set of 4 womb-like receptacles in "We have about 12 years left" which were also featured in her work in performance art.

Veronyka Lau (b. 1971, Singapore) is an English Lit grad, social and animal welfare advocate, martial artist turned artist. Arriving into art after activism, her works often explore feminine power and its mercurial quality for conveyance and resistance in our growing climate for crisis. Her first show was in Stamford Arts Centre in March 2019. She was also one of the artists commissioned by the Urban Development Board’s initiative to bring art to Kampong Glam through the outdoor Gelam Gallery in July 2019. Veronyka has since been made Associate Artist with local art collective Post-Museum, co-presenting an installation in Chan+Hori Contemporary in their programme line-up of Singapore Utopia and the Singapore Biennale in August 2019 and February 2020. Her performance work can be seen in 4 editions of the Wuwei Performance Series.

She continues to explore themes of feminine power and its manifestations in environments that are inherently adversarial and in decline, in performance and artworks.
