Yuko Kurihara graduated from the Joshibi University of Art and Design masters program in 2008. She works with stone as the main material for her art. While stone is often considered a difficult material to work with, she was attracted to its presence, hardness, and heaviness. “When I first carved stone at my art school, I was immediately attracted to the art.” Her sculptures stand with a delicate balance and carefully calculated center of gravity. Her art is designed so that it can be positioned in multiple directions as her art has many faces it can be viewed from. She aims to create a form or structure that has never been seen before. “I want to take shapes that are only formed for split seconds like waves or sparks and turn it into my work."
