Renewed Rain ~ The Most Familiar Way of the Unusual

2020/09/16
Shinzo Okuoka

Rain is probably the most familiar and extraordinary thing for human beings.

This extraordinary event has given birth to numerous dramas, and has created ripples in the hearts of people in various forms such as novels and paintings.

Japanese people are familiar with the "Sunset at Oohashiatake" by Utagawa Hiroshige from their textbooks. Did you know that this work, which was copied by Van Gogh, was the first in the world to depict rain in lines? (There are various theories.) Until then, rain had been represented in paintings by umbrellas and reflections of light on the wet ground. However, when "The Sunset of the Great Hammerhead" crossed the sea, the shape of rain in the world was updated.

In this article, I would like to introduce several artists who are pursuing a new expression of rain that replaces the famous painting "The Evening Storm of the Giant Horseshoe," which was painted over 150 years ago.
